What does it mean to be “community-based”?

Iowa City Hospice is a community-based organization. We were founded about 40 years ago by neighbors and community members who saw a need for local services to bring dignity and comfort to end of life care. By 1983, we had a board of directors and trained volunteers, all community members working together toward a heartfelt goal.

Since our founding, our community has expanded to include all of Johnson County and the counties that touch it. Our staff live in the community they serve. We are your neighbors and friends. This is our home: We know these places, we know these facilities, and we know these people. This is a wonderful place to be, and a wonderful place to serve.

Our formation, our foundation, and our success would not be possible without the support of our community.  We have been sustained for four decades through generous donations of time, of expertise, of money, and of spirit.

We strive to repay that generosity by keeping our community foremost in all of our goals:

  • We answer to local, volunteer board members who give freely of their time and talent – not a compensated corporate board in distant headquarters.
  • Our mission is “to provide compassionate care for anyone in our community affected by serious advanced illness and end of life conditions.” That’s anyone in our community, whether or not they can pay for services.
  • Since Iowa City Hospice is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, every dollar we receive goes back into our community, through compassionate patient care,  enhanced services, staff salaries, volunteer training and more.

Iowa City Hospice is homegrown, brought forth from the community to serve the community. Some of our original volunteers are with us still, and we cherish their continued support. We cherish your continued support.

If you’re new to the Iowa City area, or new to hospice services, welcome to our community. If you’ve been around awhile, thank you for welcoming us.

Grieving Your Spouse – October Programs

According to grief expert Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt, there are certain needs we have when we are grieving. There is a need for the bereaved to express their grief in some way whether verbally or in another way. We need to respect what our bodies and minds are telling us and learn to nurture ourselves, whether we are experiencing a multitude of emotions or numbness.

Grieving Your Spouse is a professionally led ongoing support group for people whose spouse or significant other has died in the last three years. The group is set up to help the grieving partner reconcile the loss. In the group, we not only learn from others who are also grieving but also have an opportunity to process our own grief. This is also a great opportunity to network with others who understand what you are going through.

When: Wednesday, October 11 and Wednesday, October 25

Where: Iowa City Hospice 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, 52240

Time: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

To RSVP or for more information contact Julie Bockenstedt at 319-688-4217 or julie.bockenstedt@iowacityhospice.org.

February is American Heart Month!

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States? This is also true for the state of Iowa. More than 600,000 Americans die of heart disease each year.

Although heart disease is the leading cause of death, it is NOT the primary diagnosis for the majority of hospice patients. This could mean that not all persons who die from heart disease are receiving hospice services, even though they may be eligible.

Iowa City Hospice can help.

Do you have questions about hospice eligibility? Are you thinking about how you or a loved one could benefit from hospice services? Our highly trained professionals can guide, support, and educate patients to help manage their heart disease and add quality to days.

Call Iowa City Hospice at 319-351-5665 or visit www.iowacityhospice.org.
