What Iowa City Hospice volunteers do
The assistance provided by volunteers is as varied as the patients, families and communities we serve.
Many volunteers work directly with patients and families, others provide support in the office, still others educate the community or assist with fund raising.

Become an Iowa City Hospice Patient Care Volunteer
Patient care volunteers provide companionship and support to terminally ill patients and their loved ones. Volunteers provide many forms of assistance, at all levels of skill. Many are relatives and friends of former Iowa City Hospice patients. They have seen first-hand how Iowa City Hospice’s care impacts quality of life and they want to help others experience its unique benefits.
To be qualified to assist patients and families, volunteers must undergo a 14-hour training program approved by Medicare and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
Check out these educational opportunities on the calendar.

Pet Peace of Mind
Pet Peace of Mind program recognizes the healing bond between owner and pet, and offers basic services to ease the physical and financial burden of caring for a pet during a time of illness. We need volunteers who can take referral information from patients and caregivers needing our services, who are comfortable handling a variety of pet breeds to help with companionship and exercise of the pet, delivery of pet food, waste “management”, and transportation of the pet to veterinarian and grooming appointments.
We also need volunteer “ambassadors” willing to help us make connections to potential “pet care partners” in all 7 counties of the Iowa City Hospice service area (Johnson, Iowa, Linn, Cedar, Muscatine, Louisa & Washington).
Please contact sarah.neary@iowacityhospice.org (319) 688-4216 or
(800) 897-3052 with your interest and ideas. This program does not require completion of the Iowa City Hospice Volunteer Program.

Set up a volunteer training in your community
Iowa City Hospice volunteers are especially needed in communities outside Iowa City/Coralville, including those in Cedar, Iowa, Louisa, Muscatine and Washington Counties. Although many of our training sessions take place in Iowa City, we can bring the training to your community—we simply need six or more trainees.
For more information, or to schedule a training session, contact the Iowa City Hospice volunteer program coordinator by email or call
319-688-4216, 800-897-3052.
