Memorial and Honorary Gifts
Memorial gifts are a meaningful way to honor the memory of a loved one. Memorial donors will receive a thank you letter, which also serves as a tax receipt, and we also notify the family that a gift has been made in their loved one’s name. This simple language is suggested for the obituary:
“Memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, IA 52240”
Honorary gifts are a special way to recognize a birthday, anniversary, or other special day. The person honored will be notified of your gift.
Honor a Caregiver
Did you know that you may make your gift in honor of Iowa City Hospice caregivers? Include a note with your gift and it will be shared with the staff person(s) you have chosen to honor and the hospice team. You may designate this gift for patient care or staff education.
Employer Matching Gifts
Your employer may offer matching gifts for charities that are supported by employees, increasing the impact of your gift. Check with your employer.
Endowment Fund Gifts
Gifts for the Iowa City Hospice Endowment Fund may be made directly to the Community Foundation of Johnson County. There are significant tax benefits for donors who make their gift in this way. To learn more, visit CommunityFoundationOfJohnsonCounty.org or contact Mike Stoffregen at firstname.lastname@example.org or 319-337-0483. Endowment Fund gifts remain invested so that your gift is a source For Good… For Ever. The Foundation is located at 325 E. Washington Street, Iowa City, IA 52240 or can be reached by phone at 319-337-0483.
Planned Gifts may be made in many different ways through your estate plan – some are listed below. Your lawyer or financial professional can advise you on the best means to make such a gift and the benefits to you and your family. For the information you will need to include Iowa City Hospice in your estate plans, visit our website for bequest language or contact Karla Earnest, Executive Director at 319-688-4212.
Donors often include a gift to Iowa City Hospice in their estate plans, most commonly through a charitable bequest in their will or trust. In preparing such a plan with your attorney, please use this sample language for your charitable bequest:
I give to Iowa City Hospice, Inc., a nonprofit corporation of the State of Iowa, located at 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, IA 52240 whose taxpayer identification number is 42-1154098 (choose one of the following options)
- the sum of $______.
- _____percent or all of the residue of my estate.
- all of my interest in the following described property:_____.
Please call 319-688-4212, 800-897-3052 or email us if you are considering this type of gift.
Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Securities
Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock can have tax benefits for you while being important to Iowa City Hospice. By making a gift of appreciated assets directly to Iowa City Hospice you can deduct the full market value if you itemize your taxes. Please call 319-688-4212, 800-897-3052 or email us to discuss this type of gift.
Outright Gifts of IRA Assets
The IRA Charitable Rollover is back! If you are 701/2 years or older, you may make a gift of up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to Iowa City Hospice. This provision, part of the American Tax Payer Relief Act passed by Congress in 2012, allows you to make a gift from your IRA now while you are living and able to witness the benefits of your generosity. Your gift may count toward your annual required minimum distribution and will be excluded from your gross income. You may not, however, also use the gift as a charitable deduction. Because the transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, you will receive the benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deductions. It is wise to consult a tax professional if you are considering this type of gift.
Deferred Gifts of IRA and Other Retirement Assets
Another way to use IRA assets in your charitable giving plans is to make Iowa City Hospice a primary or secondary beneficiary of all or a portion of your qualified IRA, retirement plan, or annuity. To do this, please contact your plan’s administrator to ask for a change of beneficiary form, and specify Iowa City Hospice, Inc. (our full legal name) as a beneficiary of the plan. Please call 319-688-4212, 800-897-3052 or email us for additional information about this type of gift.
Gifts of Real Estate and Other Physical Property
Offers of gifts of real estate and other physical property will be reviewed by our Board of Directors to determine our ability to accept the gift. We welcome your inquiries regarding these types of gifts. Please call Karla Earnest, Executive Director, at 319-688-4212 or 800-897-3052, or email her to discuss your interests or to ask additional questions about supporting Iowa City Hospice.
